Some students from rural schools in Necoclí (the municipality where one of Luker Chocolate’s cocoa forests is located), had to walk for over an hour to reach their schools, affecting their performance and attendance. Knowing how powerful education can be in rural development, we realized that this had to change. That is why, together with the Fundación Luker, one of our greatest allies, we created a mobility pilot so that these students could benefit from an adequate means of transportation: bicycle or donkey. If you are wondering why a donkey, it is because these animals have the strength to travel some of the paths of rural Colombia.
Between April and August 2018, 15 donkeys and 25 bicycles were delivered, improving the attendance and academic performance of 45 students, because now all their energy would be focused only on studying. We delivered the donkeys together with Caballos Formadores, experts in education assisted by horses. they implemented an education process for the development of life skills, taking advantage of the contact, harmony, and feeling of well-being that these animals provide. On the other hand, the delivery of bicycles was accompanied by a cyclist who is dedicated to teaching soft skills and using this means of transport as a tool for personal transformation.
These Vehicles for Learning improved the education of these children and helped them to develop self-care, a love for sport, to take responsibility for another living being, to be more environmentally aware, and to live in harmony and synchrony with animals.
